About Manufacturing (MFG) Day

MFG Day is comprised of scheduled events that promote manufacturing to students, parents and educators. It launches each year on the first Friday in October and continues throughout the month. MFG Day helps show the reality of modern manufacturing. It encourages thousands of companies and educational institutions to open their doors to students, parents, teachers and community leaders. On top of that, MFG Day empowers manufacturers to address their collective challenges to help communities and future generations thrive.

MFG Day is an initiative of the Manufacturing Institute, with the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association as a founding partner. The Institute grows and supports the manufacturing industry’s skilled workers for the advancement of modern manufacturing. The Institute’s diverse initiatives support women, veterans, students and workers through skills training programs, community building and supporting the advancement of manufacturing careers. As the workforce development and education partner of the National Association of Manufacturers, the Institute is a trusted adviser to manufacturers, equipping them with the resources necessary to solve the industry’s toughest challenges. Reno’s Role in the Future of Manufacturing

As manufacturers seek to fill 4 million high-skill, high-tech, and high-paying jobs over the next decade, it’s even more important to empower the future generation and encourage their involvement.

Earlier this year, Reno, Nevada was selected as the number two, top, midsize city where manufacturing is thriving. Size aside, Reno fills the number 3 top city seat nationwide for booming manufacturing operations.

The Reno economy has attracted major investments from technology companies based in California and Washington, such as Amazon and Google. Most importantly for the manufacturing industry is the location of the Tesla gigafactory in Reno. This electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant has led to rapid growth in manufacturing output and manufacturing jobs in Reno.

The manufacturing output of Reno was $3.4 billion in 2019, which was $7,054 on a per-capita basis. Manufacturing output grew by 15.3% annualized over the study period. The city also has 124% more manufacturing jobs than the national average. (source)
